Creating An Attitude of Gratitude
I just returned from the grocery store to buy items for Thanksgiving dinner. Every time I go, the clerk will ask “Did you find everything?” and my reply is always “Yes, plus more!”. It made me think about how grateful I am for not having to worry about purchasing food.
It was not always that way for me, and I know it is not for many people. As a single parent, I used to worry all the time about how I was going to pay for the holidays. Would I be able to afford heat in the winter? Would my car start in the morning so I could drive to work?
I am so grateful those days are behind me, but I never want to forget what life was like back then. Those struggles and obstacles made me who I am today. Below are some tips on creating an attitude of gratitude.
I am so grateful those days are behind me, but I never want to forget what life was like back then. Those struggles and obstacles made me who I am today. Below are some tips on creating an attitude of gratitude.
Start the Day with Gratitude: Begin each day with something you are grateful for. This practice helps to focus your mind on the positive. For me, I was grateful for my children.
Express Thanks: No matter how large or small the action, say “thank you”. Another action I take is smiling and saying “good morning” or “Hi” to people who pass by. This always puts me in a better frame of mind.
Surround Yourself with Positive Influences: Volunteering or donating always makes me feel good. Volunteering your time does not cost anything and there are always old clothes or toys that can be donated.
Visual Reminders: One of my favorite prompts that I did early on was I placed a card in my wallet that said, “Be grateful”. Every time I opened my wallet, that was the first thing I saw.
Cultivating an attitude of gratitude is an ongoing practice that requires consistent effort. It is not easy but over time it will profoundly change your perspective and attract positive life changes.
I hope each and every one of you has a Thanksgiving full of abundance and love.
